Outdoor Adventure Awaits at Peabody Preserve

The Peabody Preserve Outdoor Classroom offers free unique programs for the community. These engaging activities take you on an educational journey throughout nature. Located just off Route 9, across from Sleepy Hollow Cemetery, a world of adventure awaits you.

The Peabody Preserve Outdoor Classroom, owned by the Public Schools of the Tarrytowns, has been operating for more than a decade and offers hands-on learning. Its 39 acres are open year-round to the public. “It has a trail system that is really lovely to walk that is color coded and it’s open from dawn to dusk.” said Katie Scully, Peabody Manager at the Public Schools of the Tarrytowns.

While hiking the trails you will come across a pond, an apple orchard, views of the Hudson River, and ruins of a brick factory that operated on the site from the turn-of-the-century to the 1960’s.

With the help of the community and donations, numerous programs, for all age groups, are offered for free. There is something for everyone to enjoy and the mission of the preserve is to offer experiences to the community through afterschool and weekend activities.

Programs at the preserve include, but are not limited to, magical encounters in the woods where you can discover the whimsical world of StickSprites, unearth mushrooms, and forge a deeper connection with the environment. Open your eyes and your mind as you wander the trails with the guidance of seasoned volunteers and get physical as you dance or join in on a game of soccer.

Since the preserve is a public space, all are welcome and encouraged to visit whenever they like. “This is their outdoor classroom,” said Ms. Scully about students who visit. “I tell them you know where it is now, you can bring your family back.”
