Phelps Hospital to Pay Millions in Settlement over Bad Surgery

The family of Raina Ferraro sued the medical center in 2013.

Phelps Memorial Medical Center reportedly has reached a multi-million dollar settlement with the family of 21-year-old Goshen resident Raina Ferraro, who died two years after a procedure that went wrong at the hospital.

News 12 Westchester writes that Ferraro was at the Sleepy Hollow-based hospital in 2013 for a routine endoscopy for stomach pains. Something went wrong during the surgery, and she suffered severe brain damage, and cardiac and respiratory arrest, as a result.

Ferraro died in May of this year, and in her family’s lawsuit, they claimed doctors did not properly administer anesthesia. Additionally, the family also claimed the hospital took weeks to speak with them and never explained what went wrong, according to News 12.

“We will not be issuing any statement on this matter,” wrote a spokesperson for the hospital today in an email to Patch.
