Photographer Remembers the Photo He Took in Tarrytown that Jump-Started His Career

Stephen Shore was a student at Hackley School when he took the picture.

In a Time magazine feature series, Photographer Stephen Shore reminisces about the picture he took at age 12 that jump-started his career.

While a student at Hackley School in Tarrytown in 1960, Shore snapped a photo of the lower school headmaster taking a team portrait.

“It struck me because it’s self-referential: it was not treating a photographer as an invisible witness, but about a photographer making a picture and you can see the picture he is making,” Shore told Time. “You can see my shadow, so you can see me making the picture.”
