GREENBURGH, NY — Greenburgh residents continue to complain about poor postal service. Now town officials want to do a formal test of mail delivery in town.

Supervisor Paul Feiner seeks 10 volunteers for the test, which will be conducted during October and November. The task is pretty easy but requires commitment. Volunteers may be from any community in town, but no business address, apartment address, or P.O. Box address can be used.

The delivery testing will utilize the same External First Class testing methodology used by the Postal Service to test mail delivery locally and nationwide, he said.

Each volunteer will attend a one hour meeting in Town Hall, be handed 10 letters in advance of the test date, and will be instructed to place the letters in the mail stream on a specific date. They could place the letters in his/her own mailbox for carrier pick up, or in a designated blue collection box. Volunteers will confirm (via email or phone) that the letters were posted in the mail on each date as directed.

Each volunteer will subsequently receive 10 letters at their home address. The volunteer would mark the receipt date on the letter enclosed in the envelope, and return the 10 letters (and envelopes) to Town Hall when all 10 are received.

To insure accuracy in the testing, volunteers must be available to check their mail daily until all 10 pieces are received.

The data gathered during the test will provide a snapshot of local mail delivery in Greenburgh, Feiner said. Results of the weekly testing will be shared with all residents as well as management at the United States Postal Service.

Any resident wishing to be a volunteer should contact the town supervisor's office or email pfeiner@greenburghny.com.
