SHFC Action from June 2&3

Photos: Boys Fusion after their 2-0 win.

The SHFC teams took to the fields this weekend for more Westchester Youth Soccer League play. After having the previous weekend off for the Memorial Day holiday, teams were ready to tackle the remaining few weeks of the season.

With the end of the season in sight, many teams are in contention for their division championships. Here are recaps of all SHFC boys and girls soccer team play:

2009 Boys Red Lions coached by Brad Scheller hosted the Manhattan Panathinakos. The score is not available.

2008 Boys Fusion hosted the Larchmont Mamaroneck Black Knights. For much of the first quarter, the teams battled for possession, but constant driving pressure from Jack Zhunio, Sean Mackiewicz, Jezrael Panama and Kieran Degen set the pace for the game. Zhunio finally found the net on a long kick just wide of the goalie’s outstretched fingers.

A few minutes into the second half, Ian Papadopoulos drew a penalty in the goal box. Panama took the kick and launched it right at the LMFC goalie, who couldn’t contain it.

Justin Paute served as goalie for the first quarter and provided solid defense throughout the game. Dylan Largo served out the rest as goalie, blocking many shots including a few one-on-one breakaways, and keeping a clean sheet for Fusion.

Solid defense from Raul Socualaya and Dylan Pasato and exceptional hustle from Julian Patino in the first half and Edwin Dutan in the second half kept the pace up and Fusion in control. Fusion had additional scoring opportunities from many of its players, though no attempts were able to get past the LMFC defense.

Coaches Papadopoulos and Mackiewicz saw their team keep an aggressive pace for the entire game and were pleased with the team’s passing and field awareness. Fusion is now 4-2-1.

2008 Boys River Sharks coached by Ed Greenberg hosted the Eastchester Typhoon. The score is not available.

2007 Girls Blaze coached by John Sutherland and Chris Junge, and Chris Junge, played a well fought match on Sunday, meeting the Eastchester Red Dragons for the second time this season.

Blaze came out strong and pushed hard to keep the Red Dragons on their toes. The girls played the full field and both teams battled a tough defense and took several shots on goal. Blaze keeper Emily Aridas had many nice saves. Unfortunately, the Red Dragons had two successful goals and it was 0-2 at the half.

The Blaze girls continue to build skills and play well at this advanced (and more physical) level. Kayla McGuigan, Juliana Marvin, Cassie Junge, Gemma Fante and Ellie Fox pushed hard with a lot of support from Gabby Disney, Lizzie Molina, Penny McVey, Zoey Murphy and Meghan O’Hanlon. Sole scorer Julissa Casiano landed a solid shot in the second half, and it was a 1-2 final for this tough match up. Currently at 3-3-2, the Blaze will take on Chappaqua Cheetahs next Sunday.

2007 Boys Dynamo coached by Howard Allen travelled to the Greenburgh United Wolves. The Dynamo score is not available.

2007 Boys Dutchmen coached by Gary Fairley travelled to the Manhattan Fiorentina, losing 2-1. The Dutchmen sit atop their division with a 5-1-1 record.

2006 Girls Storm coached by Kevin Richardson and Tom Andruss travelled to the Gotham Girls Pelada. The score is not available.

2006 Boys Firebolts coached by Ricardo Gonzalez won 5-1 against Chappaqua Blaze. The Firebolts sit atop their division with a 7-0-1 record.

2006 Boys Warriors coached by Matt Weidner lost 3-1 to the JPSC Fire. Their overall record is 2-6.

2005 Girls Cyclones coached by Mike Levine defeated Munay Sparks 3-2. Their overall record is 4-3-1, landing them currently in third place of an eight-team division.

U13B Boys Legends The 2005 Boys Legends scored 3 nice goals to beat Scarsdale 3-1 in an entertaining game at WI on Sunday. The boys passed and moved nicely, especially on backpasses to defenders on winning possession. Hernan scored with a powerful shot off a long distance free-kick, Nikhil added a stunning volleyed second from the edge of the area after a 1-2 with Julien. After the restart Andy chest controlled and lobbed to Nikhil, who lobbed to Kieran who completed the trifecta with a lob over the keeper. Keeper Cooper on loan from the Red Devils kept a clean sheet in the 2nd half.

2005 Boys Red Devils coached by Francisco Mendieta tied the Port Chester Eagles 1-1. Their record is 1-4-2.

2003 Girls Strikers coached by Matt Evans were awarded a forfeit against the Gotham Girls Fenix. Their record is 4-4.

2004 Boys River Titans coached by Scott Burnett won 7-4 against the Lansdowne Yonkers Predators. They improve to an overall record of 4-5.

2004 Boys Argentina coached by Luis Lewis travelled to the Scarsdale Benfica and won 3-0. Argentina improved their record to 6-1-1 and sit in third place of their 10-team division.

JV Boys Los Gauchos coached by Luis Lewis won 3-1 against the LMFC Blue Demons. Their overall record is 3-3-2 and they occupy second place of their division.

The JV Mustangs only had 11 players for their game against Mamaroneck and knew they would be down to 10 in the second half. Coach Sutherland used a unique strategy to overcome this shortage. The secret to his success was that Mamaroneck only showed up with nine players. The Mustangs took advantage by building a 5-0 half time lead and finishing the game with the maximum allowed 6-0 win. Goals were scored by Julianna Largess (2), Arianna Vizcaino, Evelin Chacha, and Talia Fante. Britany Alban was player of the game with 5 assists and one goal of her own off of an Evelin assist. Defenders Annie Dineen, Emma Clarke, Sophie Sylves-Berry, Lily Rodriguez and keeper Maya Weitzen earned the shutout. Isabella Chambers was instrumental in midfield. The Mustangs next travel to Manhattan to face the West Side Red Bull’s.

Varsity Girls Comets coached by Seán Brosnan were awarded the win by forfeit against the Castleford Gold. They sit in second place of their division with a record of 5-2-1.
