In mid-October, the Empire State School Press Association (ESSPA) held its 84th annual conference at the Newhouse School located at Syracuse University. The ESSPA has provided education, resources, and recognition to high school journalists since 1937.

The event brought together more than 200 students to connect with publications, engage in workshops, and learn from industry professionals and professors who are passionate about communications.

“It provided an opportunity for the students to recognize their creativity and their work,” said Katherine Donahue, Sleepy Hollow High School English Teacher. “We have so many incredible writers and artists.”

At the conference Sleepy Hollow’s literary magazine, Shadow and Substance was awarded best overall layout design and received "Silver" for best overall literary magazine.

“The recognition was inspiring to the students. It’s wonderful to see who placed best, we looked at their magazines and it gave us ideas,” Ms. Donahue said. "They also learned how the layout of a magazine tells its own story."
