Sleepy Hollow Football Club -- Week 6 Action
Photos: Fergus O'Sullivan instructs the top division leading Legends. The sun shines on the 2006 Girls Storm. Fusion sees a muddy tie.
After a long week of rain, mud and cancelled practices, SHFC teams looked to the weekend, hoping to finally get back out onto the pitch to play. This weekend, many fields were closed due to poor field conditions. The games that did take place were held in challenging field and weather conditions. Kudos to all SHFC teams for their persistence given the elements.
Teams across the Westchester Youth Soccer League will have a break for the Memorial Day holiday weekend before their final 3 weekends of the spring season.
Here are recaps of all SHFC boys and girls soccer team play:

2009 Girls Red Fury coached by Katie McMahon lost this week 3-1 against Manhattan Steel. The Fury was down early in the first half but was able to come back when Rose Ritz scored off a beautiful assist from Maiyumi Marcus-Kanesaka. The Fury unfortunately were unable to score in the second half despite attempts on goal by Rachel Richardson, Meghan McMahan, Kate Masters and Erin Arnegger. Breanne Rodriguez, Maeve Yox, Charlotte Spiridakis and Kate Masters played tough on defense but were unable to stop the Manhattan Steel from scoring 2 more goals. Goalie Grace McGovern and Meghan McMahon played solid games. The Red Fury plays Pelham United on June 3rd.

2008 Girls Red Comets coached by Joe Block travelled to the West Side Red Bulls. The score is not available.
2008 Boys Fusion travelled to Mount Pleasant Mayhem and got off to an early lead when Sean Mackiewicz capitalized on a defensive dispossession for a score. In a complete downpour, Mayhem scored two quick goals to go up 2-1. Fusion answered in kind. First, Ian Papadopoulos got fouled in the box, leading to a beautiful penalty kick by Jack Zhunio. Minutes later, Pierce Davis had a breakaway and sent a long drive to take the 3-2 lead.
Goalie Dylan Largo was able to stop a slick ball on numerous attempts, though overall Fusion’s defense was quite cohesive. Aiden Lee, Edwin Dutan, Raul Socualaya and Dylan Pasato played very well in extremely muddy conditions.
In the second half, Fusion brought a lot of pressure, but Mayhem snuck in a late goal to tie it at 3. Game winning attempts by Justin Paute, Kieran Degen, Papadopoulos, Davis, Socualaya, Zhunio, Mackiewicz and Dutan each either went wide, were just barely grabbed by Mayhem’s goalie or hit the goal post, making this a heartbreaking tie.
Fusion is now 3-2-1 with 3 games left to play in the season.
2008 Boys River Sharks coached by Ed Greenberg travelled to the White Plains Black. The score is not available.
2007 Girls Blaze coached by John Sutherland tied the West Side Bulls at 1 apiece. With a record of 3-2-2, the Blaze are in second place of their division.
2007 Boys Dynamo coached by Howard Allen won 6-1 on the road against the Chappaqua Revolution. The Dynamo currently have a record of 5-1, which leads their division.
2007 Boys Dutchmen coached by Gary Fairley won 2-1 against the Rye Mustangs. The Dutchmen sit atop their division with a 5-0-1 record.
2006 Girls Storm coached by Kevin Richardson and Tom Andruss improved to 3-1-3 for the Spring season with a 4-2 win against DUSC on Sunday. The victory kept the Storm alone in 3rd place before its coming match versus the 1st place Gotham Girls Pelada on June 3rd.
Having scored just one goal over its past two games the Storm pushed more players forward to increase offensive chances. It left the defense more vulnerable, but dedicated goalie Eva Bertiz stopped most DUSC chances – including a sliding save into the attacker at the end of the game.
The Storm’s offense was led by striker Emily Orellana with a goal, an assist and the cause of a DUSC hand ball after a strong shot on goal ended in a defender’s hands. Ashley Richardson scored two goals – the first on a nice cross from Nelli Rodriguez, the second on a penalty kick. And Katie Andruss, after asking for an opportunity to leave her defensive post, scored with a powerful rebound shot.
2006 Boys Firebolts coached by Ricardo Gonzalez won 4-0 against the LMFC Blue Jaguars. The Firebolts sit atop their division with a 6-0-1 record.
2006 Boys Warriors coached by Matt Weidner were due to the play the Shrub Oak Wolfpack, but the game has been rescheduled for later this season.
2005 Girls Cyclones coached by Mike Levine defeated the Gotham Girls Arsenal 4-0. Their overall record is 3-3-1.
U13B Boys Legends played twice at WI on the weekend. On Saturday in the Westchester Cup the boys took a 1-0 lead to Transylvania but then shipped 3 goals to a very talented side. The Legends scored late but couldn't force a tie.
On Sunday the boys played some lovely soccer against New Rochelle, with all players passing and moving nicely and scoring five while keeping a clean sheet. Robert had a standout game in defense, Kenneth won and scored 2 penalties and Alex won the free kick for Hernan’s first. A good weekend’s work and thanks to the town for the turf field on a wet weekend!!
2005 Boys Red Devils coached by Francisco Mendieta were unable to play the Mount Pleasant Strikers due to field conditions. The game will be rescheduled later this season.
2003 Girls Strikers coached by Matt Evans won at home 5-1 against the Quezalitos Pink Panthers. They have an overall record of 4-4 and sit in third place in a 10-team division.
2004 Boys River Titans coached by Scott Burnett played two games this past weekend. On Saturday, they lost to the Eastchester Jaguars 5-1. On Sunday, they won against the New Rochelle Bombers 5-2 at home and improve to an overall record of 3-5.
2004 Boys Argentina coached by Luis Lewis bested the Port Chester Jaguars and improved their record to 5-1-1.
JV Boys Los Gauchos coached by Luis Lewis lost 3-2 to the division-leading Eastchester Red Devils. Their overall record is 2-3-2.
JV Mustangs coached by John Sutherland tied the second place Downtown United Soccer Club 2-2. It was an impressive accomplishment considering the Mustangs were down 5 players and 3 had stayed up all night at the Relay For The Cure charity. Arianna Vizcaino scored both goals from Evelin Chacha assists. Sophie Sylves-Berry was dominant at her outside defensive spot winning every battle and starting counter-attacks. Britany Alban was player of the game controlling the midfield and being involved in almost every play. The Mustangs get a week off for Memorial Day and the face Larchmont at home.
Varsity Girls Comets coached by Sean Brosnan won 4-1 against the Yorktown Express. With an overall record of 4-2-1, the Comets are tied for second place in their division.
