Sports Roundup - April 10 - April 16

It was a great week for lacrosse and varsity softball.

Here's a roundup of this week's Horsemen action.

Varsity Girls Lacrosse - April 15

When a team puts together the two most important facets of any game, that being an offensive and defensive strategy, good things are bound to happen. In this case, the ladies from the Sleepy Hollow varsity lacrosse team won decidedly, 23-15, against their most recent opponent, the Keio Academy.

The win not only improved their overall record to 3-2, but spectators observed an offensive attack from all angles. Leading the attack were Jen Angevine, 5 goals and 4 assists, Rachel Swenson, 7 goals and 3 assists, and Annelise Birrittella, 7 goals. This trio dominated the offensive onslaught that gave Keio undeniable trouble throughout both the first and second half of the game.

The lady Horsemen were also helped out offensively by Emily Mottola, 2 goals and 2 assists, Gabby Cellante (who also worked extremely hard for ground balls), 1 goal and 2 assists, Bobbi Shortell, 1 goal, Gianna Volpe, 2 assists, and Marisa Weissman, 3 assists. In addition, a team is only as good as its defense, and the lady Horsemen are proud to have their cylinders running smoothly with a hard-working goal keeper, Sara Rennert. She performed excellent in goal and had 16 total saves for the game. The girls look forward to playing the Vikings from Clarkstown South this upcoming Monday, April 19th away.

Golf - April 14

On Wednesday, the Sleepy Hollow varsity golf team notched its third win of the season to improve its record to 3-3. The Horsemen hosted Valhalla in a non-league match. Although the weather was perfect for golf, the aerated greens made putting difficult. The low round was shot by freshmen Jack Bender – his consistent drives, accurate wedge shots, and solid putting always put him in contention for low scores. Captain Jimmy Bender who has been crushing his drives lately struggled with his putting and birdied the ninth hole to shoot a 44. Jack Schnog continued his solid play by shooting a 53. Marlee Carayol rebounded nicely following a brutal round on Monday to shoot a 48 on the lower course. The Horsemen face off against Dobbs Ferry on Wednesday, April 21st at 3:30 PM at Sleepy Hollow Country Club.

Varsity Baseball - April 14

On Wednesday, the varsity baseball team lost a heartbreaker to Irvington 6-5. Down 5-3 in the top of the seventh inning, Yuniel Santana hit a pinch hit, game-tying, two-run homerun. Entering the bottom of the seventh, Irvington managed to get runners on 1st and 3rd with two outs. Unfortunately, a questionable balk call brought in the winning run for Irvington.

Tennis - April 14

The Sleepy Hollow high school tennis team played against Pelham high school. Sleepy Hollow players did their best but Pelham has a powerfull team. The final score was a good victory of 7-0 for Pelham.

JV Softball - April 14

On Wednesday, the team picked up a win, with Yesenia Torres as the winning pitcher to advance their record to 2-2. Jenny Guzman picked up a few stolen bases and RBIs. As a whole, all girls played well together, making the key plays in the field to get the win. Great job, girls! Our next game is on Friday, April 16th at Dobbs Ferry.

Varsity Softball - April 14

Sleepy Hollow Softball improved to 5-0 yesterday with a 13-4 victory over Irvington. Cassandra Torres pitched the win improving her record to 2-0. She struck out 4 and walked none. Jamie Bucci had two hits and 3 runs scored. Jessica Bucci had two hits. Charlotte Frank had a clutch pinch hit and a nice play in the field. Shaylin Best had a couple of excellent defensive plays in right field.

JV Softball - April 13

On Tuesday, the JV softball team suffered a loss to Edgemont. They look forward to seeing this team again later on in the season to get a second chance to win. Despite the loss, pitcher Megan Maher looked great on the mound.

Varsity Girls Lacrosse - April 13

The girls lacrosse team trounced Yonkers High School 15-4. Read the full story here.

Varsity Softball - April 13

Sleepy Hollow Softball remained undefeated with an 8-4 victory at Edgemont bringing their record to 4-0. Jamie Bucci pitched the win improving her record to 3-0. Jamie also had two hits and two runs scored. Jess Onwe had three hits – a double and two triples, 3 runs scored and 3 RBI's. Jess Campbell had a triple and 2 RBI's.

Varsity Boys Lacrosse - April 12

The Horsemen improved their record to 2-1 as they defeated Clarkstown North, with a score of 13 – 8. The win was a complete team effort featuring seven different goal-scorers for Sleepy Hollow, and out of the thirteen goals, eight were assisted.

Captain John Bucci led the way with four goals and five assists. Jorge Berenguer added one assist to his hat trick, while Tim Rachlin scored two more goals. Justin Rosero, Kyle McGovern, Dennis Maloy and Pete Del Monaco each contributed one goal to round out the scoring. Another strong performance by the defense was led by junior goalie, Jay Ramirez, who made ten saves during the win.

Varsity Baseball - April 12

On Monday, the varsity baseball team toughed out a 7-6 win against Edgemont to improve their record to 3-2.

Danny Kaplan pitched a hard-nosed game keeping Edgemont off balance for six innings. Jose Rivera came in for the seventh inning and the save. Offensively, the Horsemen were led by Aydan Ellman and John Randazzo who had two hits and an RBI each. Nick Fanelli also added an RBI double early in the game.

Golf - April 12

On Monday, the Sleepy Hollow golf team faced off against Irvington and Hastings in a tri-match. Sleepy Hollow split the match beating Hastings 252-281 but losing to Irvington 239-252. Due to a sick player, Sleepy Hollow only played five players and was unable to drop its highest score. Freshmen sensation, Jack Bender, shot the low round of the day making eagle on a 505 yard par 5. Older brother Jimmy Bender faltered making a costly triple bogey on hole 7 but managed to shoot a 43. Newcomer TJ Kent continued his strong play carding a 48.

Tennis - April 12

The Sleepy Hollow varsity tennis team played against the strong team of Hastings High School. With deuces and tiebrakers Sleepy Hollow lost 7-0.

JV Baseball - April 12

On Monday, the junior varsity baseball team suited up for the first home contest of the season against Edgemont High School.  The young squad pulled out a team victory that posted a run count of 10-5 on the score card and win number two on the year.

Varsity Softball - April 10

Sleepy Hollow Softball went to 3-0 on Saturday, April 10th, beating Hasting 8-7. Jamie Bucci pitched the win and had a hit and two runs scored. Her pitching record is now 2-0. Jessica Bucci had 3 hits, two runs scored and two RBI's. Jess Campbell made a great catch in right and completed a nice double play with her throw to first.
