A summary of this week's spring high school sports

Softball, April 8

The Sleepy Hollow Softball team improved to 2-0 on Thursday, with a 10-2 win over Yonkers. Cassandra Torres picked up the win, striking out four and walking none – her record is 1-0. Brittany Brand had three hits and two runs scored and Jess Campbell had two hits and three RBI's. Jenny Bucci had a nice catch in right field. The softball team played against Hastings today.

Varsity Baseball, April 8

The varsity baseball team combined to no hit Yonkers in a 4-0 win on Thursday. Jose Rivera pitched five and a third innings and Dan Kaplan pitched one and two-thirds to combine for no hits and no runs. Rivera finished with no hits, no runs, 13 strikeouts and six walks. Rivera is 2-0 in two games with a combined 10 innings of work and 26 strikeouts and an ERA of 0.00. Offensively the team got two RBIs from Aydan Ellman and a two-run home run from Nick Fanelli in the third inning. The next game for the Horsemen is at Edgemont on Monday , April 12th.

The varsity golf team visited Hollow Brook Country Club in Cortlandt Manor to face Hendrick Hudson. In spite of losing 253 to 260, the Horsemen had two outstanding rounds. Junior captain, Jimmy Bender, shot a season-low 38 on the par 35 course. Not to be outdone younger brother, freshmen Jack Bender, chipped in on the last hole to shoot a career low 38. Junior TJ Kent is working hard to be more consistent; he shot a 54. Freshmen Jack Schnog is hitting the ball much better than last season but his scores have not reflected his improvement – he shot a 58. Marlee Carayol shot a 72 on the challenging course. The Horsemen face off against Irvington and Hastings on Monday, April 12 at Ardsley Country Club at 4 p.m.

JV Baseball, April 8

On Thursday, the JV baseball team geared up for the first contest of the season against Yonkers High School. The two squads played five innings of baseball before the game was called due to darkness. With stand-out performances from Dionel Infante (four for five with a triple and three singles) Peter Pena (two for four), and Nick Vallo (two for four), the Horsemen were able to put together a win that ended with a score of 12-5. The JV baseball team plays its first home game of the season against Edgemont High School on Monday, April 12th at 4:30 p.m.

Tennis, April 8

Sleepy Hollow lost to Mamaroneck. Their next match is at home on Monday, April 12, against Hastings.

Girls Lacrosse, April 8

Sleepy Hollow outscored their opponent, Pelham, in the second half 7-6, but unfortunately it wasn't enough. Due to a slow start, the Horsemen ladies had quite a deficit to contend with from the first half. The final score was 11-16 Pelham.

JV Softball, April 8

The JV softball team opened their season with a heartbreaker at Yonkers High School. The final score was 15-14 – Yonkers took the lead in the last inning. Sleepy Hollow held a strong lead for six innings thanks to steady pitching from Megan Maher and some big plays in the field by Alex Kendrick, Skarlen Valentin and Cheyenne Garcia. Jenny Guzman dazzled the spectators and her teammates with a home run.

Boys Lacrosse, April 7

The Horsemen opened up their season against Mamaroneck at home on Wednesday. Although the team put forth a solid effort, they lost 12-2.

Golf, April 7

The Sleepy Hollow varsity golf team hosted Hendrick Hudson at Sleepy Hollow Country Club. Junior captain Jimmy Bender, sank a 30 foot putt on the final hole to card a team low 43. Younger brother Jack Bender, shot a 45 three-putting the last green. Newcomer TJ Kent again showed promise shooting a 51 – not too shabby for his first time at Sleepy Hollow. Jack Schnog shot a 59. Playing on the par 31 Lower Course, eighth grader Csaurel Clarke shot a 50 and freshmen Marlee Carayol shot a 63.

Tennis, April 7

The Sleepy Hollow boys' tennis team played against Ardsley at Pierson Park last week. In singles, Ben Hofling lost against Mitchell Osterower by (6-1)(3-6)(6-4), Jason Cai had a nice victory against Tony Chang by (6-4)(6-3), John Sampaio lost against Sam Khym by (6-1)(6-1). In doubles Tom Von Heil and Alex Dopico lost against Jun Ueki and Andrew Shoeman by (6-0)(6-2), Filipe Pacheco and Arsham Tabibian lost against Max Rabuse and Bernar Chang by (6-1)(6-0), Carl Robinson and Kyle Norman lost against Hanson Lee and Elliot Taffet (6-1)(6-1), for the fourth doubles there was no match because Sleepy Hollow didn't have enough players.

Girls Lacrosse, April 6

The Horsemen girls' lacrosse team put on quite a show for their first outing, beating Irvington 23-14. Senior Captain Rachel Swenson had six goals and one assist, Jennifer Angevine had six goals and five assists, Annelise Birrittella had five goals and four assists, Andrea Alvarez had three goals and five assists, Emily Mottola had two goals and three assists, Senior Captain Alexis Bateman had one goal and one assist.  Senior Captain Taylor Greenberg led the team in ground balls and added two assists and Sara Rennert added one assist. Junior Captain Gabby Cellante played in goal for Sleepy and had eight saves.

Varsity Baseball, April 6

The varsity baseball team took a tough pre-season loss at Nyack, 18-0, on Tuesday. Armando Cabrera had two hits for the Horsemen, and also pitched over 4 innings.

Softball, April 6

Sleepy Hollow softball won their season-opening game, 12-1, over East Ramapo. Jamie Bucci celebrated her birthday by pitching the win and getting three hits. Jen Onwe had four hits including two triples and a double. Cassandra Torres made a great catch in left field.

Varsity Boys Track, April 5

On Monday, the boys' track team competed at Ardsley High School. Mike Valetin led the way for the sprinters placing first in the 100m and third in the 200m. David Maldonado had a fantastic run in the 3200m – he broke the freshmen record in that event. Both Mark and Erik Sanchez had outstanding performances in the 3200m relay and the 1600m run. Mikey Segarra threw 33 feet 2 inches in the shot put, while Will Holland had a mark of 95 feet 7 inches in the discus. The next track meet is on Tuesday, April 13.

Golf, April 5

The Sleepy Hollow varsity golf team won its first match of the season against Dobbs Ferry. The match was played at Ardsley Country Club on a bright, sunny day. Led by grizzled veterans Jimmy Bender and Jack Bender who each shot 43, the Horsemen narrowly edged out the Eagles. Making his debut, TJ Kent rebounded from a rocky first hole to shoot a 54. Returning freshman, Jack Schnog, shot a 59 and new freshman, Marlee Carayol, shot a 61. The five-man aggregate score for Sleepy Hollow was 260 to Dobbs Ferry's 265.

Varsity Baseball, April 3

Last Saturday, the Sleepy Hollow varsity baseball team took second place in the annual Lew Monaco Tournament in East Ramapo. In the first game the Horsemen beat Mount Vernon by a score of 8-3 behind the starting pitching of Jose Rivera. Jose went five innings giving up no hits, no runs, and striking out 13 batters. Leading the way offensively was Armando Cabrera with three hits, Dan Kaplan and Lariel Burgos with two hits each, and Aydan Ellman with two RBIs. The team totaled 13 hits and six stolen bases in the game.

In the championship game versus East Ramapo, the Horsemen came up short behind starter Dan Kaplan, losing to the Titans 6-3. Armando Cabrera had two hits, while Dan Kaplan added two RBIs. Jose Rivera, Armando Cabrera and Dan Kaplan received "All Tournament" honors.
