Tarrytown Rehabbing Water Tank, Outdoor Water To Be Curtailed

The watering of lawns through the use of automatic or manual lawn sprinklers is being prohibited.

TARRYTOWN, NY — Residents and businesses in the Village of Tarrytown are being asked to curtail their outdoor use of water while the village’s 4-million gallon water supply tank is repaired and coated inside and outside to prevent rust. The village is asking everyone to use only hand-held manual sprayers on flowers and vegetable gardens.

Village Administrator Richard Slingerland said the project to repair and re-paint the storage tank has been planned for many years.

The contractor began in the middle of last year and scheduled as much of the project as possible in months when people would not be watering their lawns.

Construction such as this has to take place in good, warmer weather, Slingerland said.

“Be aware that we are allowing people to water their flowers and vegetable gardens with hand-held manual sprayers. We are only prohibiting the watering of lawns through the use of automatic or manual lawn sprinklers,” he said.

The use of automatic sprinklers and sprinklers that could be left unattended for hours would lead to residences and homes in the neighborhoods having no water.

“While we would prefer they finish sooner than later, the project has to be done right because this tank maintains the water system with drinking water for approximately 12,000 residents of Tarrytown, plus all the visitors and customers who come here to the commercial businesses like restaurants and hotels and schools,” Slingerland said.
