Tarrytown Train Station: Arriving on Schedule

The massive, federally stimulated, overhaul of the Tarrytown Train Station is slated for Fall 2012 completion.

The prognosis for the T overhaul, funded by $39 million through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, was slated to be complete in 2012. Seeing as it's 2012, we wondered if all the work going on above the tracks is…on track.

One reader wondered too: "As a daily commuter, I wonder when the temporary center platform and the old overpasses will be removed, and when the traffic issues caused by the construction will be over," he asked.

Though issues are more annoyances than real concerns, these can add up when riders encounter them everyday. The narrowed lanes cause traffic tie-ups at pick-ups/departure times, and residential parking spaces have been taken up with a temporary taxi lot; not to mention all those temporary structures, fences, and detours that can make navigating the platforms themselves a challenge.

According to Aaron Donovan, media liaison for the Metropolitan Transit Authority, "the project is proceeding on schedule" and "generally speaking they are able to do the work without interfering with the train schedule."

Much of the work on the north end will be done by the end of the month including a long-anticipated elevator, and much of the south end will be done by sumer. All the work is slated for completion by Fall 2012.

The new overpass at the north end of the station, including its elevators, is scheduled to be put into service by the end of the month. The same is true for the southbound platform serving Tracks 2 and 4, including its canopy, shelters, benches, and public address system.

Work is continuing on overpass at the south end of the station, including its roofing, electrical work, window work and bird netting. Also ongoing is work on the canopy over the platform adjacent to Track 3 (the northbound platform).

"All of the above ongoing work should be finished by the fall, although most construction work should be completed by the summer," Donovan said.
