Tarrytown Volunteer Ambulance Corps Teaches 'Hands Only CPR'

Classes in CPR and first aid can be arranged, with or without certification.

TARRYTOWN, NY — The Tarrytown Volunteer Ambulance Corps provided quick 15-minute classes in "Hands Only CPR" at the recent Street Fair on June 3. The theme was “Do you have two hands and 10 minutes? You can learn to save a life.”

According to Alaric Young, a captain, many people participated and learned a vital skill.

"It's not necessary to give mouth to mouth breaths in a circumstance like this, but it is vital that a person gets chest compressions,” he said.

Young pointed out that for every one minute that a person in cardiac arrest goes without compressions, they lose 10 percent chance of survival.

This is a part of Tarrytown Volunteer Ambulance Corps's new community outreach for CPR instruction and is vital for saving lives.

“Hands Only CPR” is a way for ordinary people to make a difference, according to a spokeswoman. It is easy to learn and there is no mouth-to-mouth breathing involved. Anyone can do it and possibly help to save a life.

Tarrytown Ambulance also teaches more advanced classes in CPR and first aid according to demand by individuals, local businesses or corporations. Classes can be scheduled at their headquarters or offices. Anyone interested in that can call 914-631-4579. Those classes are several hours long and will result in certification.

If a business or individual wishes to sponsor shorter CPR and first aid courses as a community outreach, with no certification, that can also be arranged.
