STUDENT TECH ANGELS WILL BE AT THEODORE YOUNG COMMUNITY CENTER THIS SATURDAY AT 9 AM TO HELP SENIORS NAVIGATE COMPUTER CHALLENGES

Josh Topf. a sophomore at Edgemont Jr./Sr. High School, is starting a new initiative: the TECH ANGELS. He and other volunteers will be holding office hours at the Theodore Young Community Center twice a month help out senior citizens in our community with their technology literacy skills. The idea to assist our seniors first came to me when he was helping his grandfather with some technology challenges. It occurred to him that there are probably many other people, of a similar age to his grandfather, who have similar struggles with technology. Unlike his grandfather, however, they may not have grandchildren nearby to assist them.

Earlier this month he tested out the concept and helped three senior citizens had left with their technology issues resolved. The problems resolved ranged from email assistance, to gift ordering challenges on the internet, to learning basic functionality of word processing programs. Josh and Avery Yee, were able to spend a significant amount of time with each senior to cover all of their needs.

Going forward ,he is hoping to enlist many more high schoolers to assist in aiding the seniors in our community with their technology challenges. I am planning on being at the community center at least twice a month going forward. Eventually, I would like to expand this technology literacy initiative to senior citizens all throughout Westchester County.

If you wish to help him with this initiative, or you are a senior in need of technology assistance, you can reach him at jtopf@student.edgemont.org.

This is another example of students giving back to the community. For over 32 years students have volunteered as snow angels- clearing driveways of snow. In recent years a landscape angels program was started by former Greenburgh summer interns helping seniors with landscaping needs. Other students have worked hard to provide the Greenburgh Health Center with canned food for lower income patients to take. Am very grateful to Josh for organizing this program - so needed. The Tech Angels initiative will also help our elderly residents improve their quality of life.
