Thomas Butler Appointed Tarrytown Mayor

Butler is the first African American to hold the post.

TARRYTOWN, NY — The village of Tarrytown appointed Thomas Butler to be the new mayor. He is the first African American in the history of the village to hold the post.

Butler is filling the vacancy created by the resignation of Drew Fixell. The board made Butler's appointment Monday.

He was first elected trustee in 2005 and has served on the board ever since. He had been serving as the deputy mayor.

Butler holds undergraduate and graduate degrees from Pratt Institute and attended New York University, Harvard University and the University of Manchester in England.

He is currently a director at Tishman/AECOM Construction in New York City. Previously, he had his own architectural and interior design firm and was Mount Vernon's building commissioner.

Butler has lived in Tarrytown since 1984, having previously lived in Bedford-Stuyvesant and Clinton Hill in Brooklyn. He and his wife Cheryl have four children, three of whom were raised in Tarrytown and attended the public school system.

He said he was honored that his colleagues placed their trust in him to serve as mayor.

"My goal as mayor is to strive for unity, understanding and respect as we do our work to serve the people of the community," Butler said. "I look forward to continuing to work with my fellow board members as we work for the good of the residents and businesses that make Tarrytown our home."

The board also appointed Rebecca “Becky” McGovern to become deputy mayor, and David Kim as trustee.
