Thursday 10/24: Phelps Hospital Farmers Market at the Park

To Cook or Not to Cook

How fortunate to have Phelps Hospital Farmers Market at the Park for a few more weeks, so do take advantage. The cooler weather is an appetite booster and one tends to think of heartier choices.  There's still plenty of fruit and vegetable options from Wrights Orchards and DoReMe Farms plus meat and eggs from Raghoo Farms ... think casseroles and cobblers.
If you'd rather choose something ready-made, for lunch or dinner there are also lots of picks:  soups, salads, wraps and baked goods from True Foods, sandwiches, salads, dips and pesto from Pure Food Sisters, Indian food from Chutney Masala, Greek specialties from Ms. D's Mediterranean Delights, a tempting array of savory and sweet organic baked goods from Red Barn Bakery, and of course those ever popular confections from Rich Brownies.  Sohha Yogurt is a great compliment to any meal; Linzi has some wicked vegan chocolate truffles and other accents at Spice Revolution and Crown Maple organic syrup and sugar also compliments both sweet and savory dishes, especially this time of year.  New vendor alert: welcome The Pickle Man!
Here are the vendors we are expecting, followed by last week's sampling recipe for Applesauce:

APPLESAUCE
About 6 apples, peeled, cored and sliced into about 1 inch chunks
1 cup apple juice or cider
Juice of 1/2 lemon
1/3 to 1/2 cup maple sugar
1/2 to 1 teaspoon cinnamon
Combine all ingredients and cook over medium heat until apples are tender.  Leave chunky or puree in blender for a smoother sauce.
