Village of Tarrytown Awarded $325,000 For New Fire Boat

Marine rescue unit receives state money for new fire boat

TARRYTOWN- Assemblyman Tom Abinanti (D-Greenburgh/Mount Pleasant) today announced he secured $325,000 of state funding for a new fireboat for the Village of Tarrytown. The money was awarded from the State and Municipal Facilities Program (SAM Funds) funded through the state budget.

“Properly equipping Tarrytown’s marine unit is crucial to the health and safety of all those who are in and around the Hudson River,” said Abinanti. “The new boat is larger and equipped with modern technology to support their response to challenging situations”.

The Tarrytown Fire Department responds to emergencies on the Hudson River and is the designated first responder for emergencies around the new bridge. The Fire Department’s marine unit has responded to boating accidents, construction accidents and suicides from the bridge. In fact, the Tarrytown Fire Department was the first to respond to the March 12th 2016 tugboat tragedy near the old Tappan Zee Bridge. The Fire Department’s current fire boat is almost 20 years old.

“On behalf of the people of Tarrytown, I very much appreciate the Assembly’s providing the funds for a new fire boat,” said Drew Fixell Mayor of the Village of Tarrytown. “This will help our dedicated response team to more effectively respond to emergencies particularly as the second span is being built”.

“As workers continue construction of the new bridges and with heightened interest in recreation on the Hudson River, it is more important than ever that our first responders have the tools they need,” Abinanti noted.
