Public Hearing for Safer Route to School

The Village of Sleepy Hollow urges citizens to come out in support of planned improvements at the intersection of Beekman and North Washington, all the better to secure a New York State Safe Routes to Schools Grant.

The village of Sleepy Hollow has sent out a public notice on an informational meeting early next week:

Please take notice the Board of Trustees of the Village of Sleepy Hollow will hold a public information meeting on Tuesday, October 2, 2012 at 7pm at the Sleepy Hollow Village Hall, 28 Beekman Avenue, Sleepy Hollow New York. The public information meeting is to hear and consider comments from members of the public regarding planned improvements to the intersection of Beekman Avenue and North Washington Street.

Planned improvements include the replacement of the traffic signal at the intersection to include pedestrian signals in all directions with countdown timers, a programmable traffic loop sensor to register vehicles waiting for a green light in side streets and drop curbs compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act. The goal is to improve the safety of children and adult pedestrians in traversing this intersection, while ensuring smooth vehicular traffic flow.

All interested persons will be given the opportunity to express their views concerning the plans. The proceedings will be recorded.

If this use this intersection and experience its current challenges, and this all sounds good to you, Village Administrator Anthony Giaccio urges you to come out and express that. The village is trying to secure a New York State Safe Routes to Schools Grant to get the work done and the more support the better.

"To have a better chance of getting the grant, it would help if residents came out in support," Giaccio said. "If you, or anyone you know, came out in favor of this, it would help us. The project will make it safer for school children to walk to and from Morse School."

Another spot of note in Sleepy Hollow has been the school bus stop at Bedford and Pine Close, which many parents have deemed treacherous to cross. I've talked to the Police Chief about this and will have a post on this soon.
