Watch Falcon Chicks Via FalconCam Installed On Tappan Zee Bridge

TARRYTOWN, NY — Falcon chicks — or eyasses — can be seen high atop the Tappan Zee Bridge. That is, if their mother gets out of the way. The nest box, which was installed and is maintained by the state Thruway Authority, provides shelter and a vantage point from which the peregrines can seek and swoop down on prey.

When the new bridge is completed, the Thruway Authority said there will be a nest box on it, too.

Not only can you spy on the falcons, but you can now also watch as they bring more falcons into the world.

The Thruway Authority said local school children will have the opportunity again this year to name the baby falcons.

Elementary and middle school classes were sent a link to which they can submit their suggested names, after which the public will have the opportunity to weigh in on the choices during a week-long online poll in May.

Of course, the number of winning names will match the number of falcons hatched this year.

Previous winning names included Irvwing, Hudson, Bridge-ette and Zee.

The Thruway Authority did offer a note of caution about the FalconCam: “At any given moment, you may see the adult falcons eating, feeding their young, defending their nest and more. These are wild birds and their behaviors reflect what really happens in nature. Some of their actions may be unpleasant to watch and it is possible that some of the fledglings may not survive into adulthood.”
