Yogo Berry, a Self-Service Frozen Yogurt Boutique, Opens in Tarrytown on Broadway

Patrons pull a lever to pour as much frozen yogurt as they desire into a paper cup, they add toppings and bring the finished dessert to a cashier who weights it to determine the cost.

A self-service frozen yogurt shop called Yogo Berry has been opened in Tarrytown by Lee Wha Gyong, the former owner of a grocery in Scarsdale, and his wife Joanne Lee.

The customers prepare their desserts at this store without any involvement by the shop employees. Here is how the "semi-automated" process works.

  • Patrons pick up a paper cup (there is only one size)
  • They proceed directly to a bank of yogurt dispensers and decide on a flavor—they have the option to mix two flavors.
  • The lever is pulled down to start loading the frozen yogurt and when the cup is filled to the desired amount, the lever is rised to its original position—this stops the flow.
  • Fresh fruit and dry toppings are then added from a wide variety of choices at the toppings bar
  • Finally, the finished dessert is brought to a cashier who weights it to determine the cost.

Four basic flavors and two supplementary flavors are provided by the three dispenser sets—the basic flavors are vanilla, chocolate, strawberry and original. The two additional flavors change frequently but not daily—these flavors might be blueberry or mango. There are three parallel levers on each dispenser—the left and right levers control specific flavors (such as vanilla and chocolate) and the middle lever activates the mixing of the two flavors.

A half-full cup of the frozen yogurt represents 90 calories with zero calories from trans and saturated fat according to the franchising chain.
