A resident, her four dogs, two cats and a neighbor were saved by Selden Fire Department firefighters and Suffolk police officers.
SELDEN, NY — Two people and several animals were rescued from a Selden house fire on Friday morning, Suffolk police said in a news release.
A fire broke out at an Iroquois Avenue home around 11:30 a.m., prompting a response by Sixth Precinct police officers and members of the Selden Fire Department. Sergeant William Madden and police officers Robert Strandvold and Lynn Volpe began evacuating a resident and her four dogs. Officers also evacuated a neighbor who was inside the home trying to douse the fire. As firefighters extinguished the fire, they removed three unconscious cats from the home.
Volpe, Strandvold and officer Corey Vogt began administering first aid and oxygen to the cats. Officer Angelica Nebel and Selden Fire Department paramedic Melissa Blom also helped treat the animals. Three dogs and three cats were brought to the Selden Animal Hospital for emergency veterinary care. One of the cats died, police said.
