7,450 Students Graduate From Stony Brook University [Photos]

Stony Brook confers a record number of degrees to a diverse group of students from 43 states and 73 countries.

Stony Brook University held its 58th commencement on Friday and awarded some 4,530 bachelor's degrees, 2,035 master's, 450 doctoral degrees, 265 certificates, 130 M.D., and 40 D.D.S. degrees, to
students from 43 states and 73 countries. Graduate ages ranged from 18 to 77.

An honorary degree of Doctor of Letters was conferred to commencement speaker Tracy K. Smith, a Pulitzer Prize-winner, Poet Laureate of the US and Princeton University professor.

The class of 2018 was represented by student speaker Eshani Goradia who is continuing with her studies at SBU's School of Medicine.

The national anthem and Stony Brook's alma mater were sung by Stony Brook graduate student and operatic soprano Alina Tamborini.

Guests included Senator Chuck Schumer, Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone, NY State Senator Kenneth LaValle, and State Senate majority leader John Flanagan.
