STONY BROOK, NY — The State University of New York at Stony Brook will host a day of remembrance on Sept. 11, honoring those lost in the terror attacks.
The day of programming will include a reflection at the memorial arch from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. The campus community is invited to visit the arch for quiet contemplation and reflection, placing a flower amongst the grove of trees planted, as a way to celebrate the lives and grow the legacies of the 21 Stony Brook alumni who perished in the attacks and whose names are engraved on the memorial arch.
The campus' chimes toll 21 times in memoriam at 8:46 a.m. to remember the legacies of the 21 Stony Brook alumni.
Between noon to 1 p.m. at the academic mall, between the SAC and the Library, the community will have the opportunity to plant a pinwheel in remembrance, "creating a powerful symbol of unity, resilience, and hope," university officials said.
There will be meditation for remembrance from noon to 12:30 .pm., as part of Healthier U for a Loving Kindness Meditation. This mindfulness-based meditation helps us cultivate compassion, kindness, acceptance, and love, for ourselves, and all others.
There will be reflection and screenings in the Wang Center from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., and the community can visit a dedicated viewing room at East Hall, Wang Center. This space will feature documentaries and video presentations that honor the lives lost, highlight stories of resilience, and provide opportunities for reflection, remembrance, and learning.
"All are welcome to pause, engage, and reflect in this quiet and meaningful setting," university officials said.
