Dog In Stony Brook Attack Placed On 'Bite Hold' Of 10-Day Confinement At Owner's Home Pending Probe: Town

STONY BROOK, NY — A dog involved in the attack on a woman at a park in Stony Brook on Wednesday has been ordered to undergo a 10-day bite hold of confinement to its owner's home while an investigation is undertaken by the Suffolk police and Town of Brookhaven's Public Safety departments, a town spokesman told Patch on Friday.

The incident was reported to the police and the town as part of normal protocol, he said.

The attack, which involved two unleashed dogs, unfolded at around 2 p.m. on Wednesday at Strathmore Park, and the woman was taken by Setauket Rescue to Stony Brook University Hospital for non-life-threatening injuries, police said.

The incident has been registered with the Suffolk Society of Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, Chief Roy Gross said.

The county's Department of Health Services was also notified of the incident, a spokeswoman said.

An employee contacted the person responsible for the dogs, and it was determined that both dogs had current rabies vaccinations, she said.

"After 10 days, DHS staff will follow up to ensure that the animals are still healthy to rule out the risk of rabies and the need for preventive rabies treatment for the person who was bitten," she added.
