Bathing Suspended At 21 Beaches Along Brookhaven's North Shore: Officials
The advisory is expected to be lifted on Tuesday at 7 p.m., the Suffolk Department of Health Services says.
STONY BROOK, NY — A bathing advisory has been issued at 64 beaches, including 21 along the north shore or Brookhaven Town, due to heavy rainfall, the Suffolk County Department of Health Services said Monday.
The advisory is based on the potential that bacteria levels at these beaches exceed state standards. The beaches covered by the advisory are in areas heavily influenced by stormwater runoff from the surrounding watersheds or adjacent tributaries. Because of their location in an enclosed embayment, they experience limited tidal flushing.
Health officials recommend bathing and other water contact be suspended in affected areas until the waters have been flushed by two successive tidal cycle — at least a 24-hour period — after the rain has ended.
