The Atelier Art School and Gallery

CLOSING RECEPTION SATURDAY, OCTOBER 24, 5-7PM!
Award-winning artist Mary Jane van Zeijts has produced ten new works for you to enjoy. As a professional artist with experience in several mediums, Mary Jane goes into nature for inspiration. She never tires of things to paint such as Avalon Park, [Frank] Melville [Memorial] Park and West Meadow Beach. The landscape is so varied that she is forever inspired to create.
“Art allows you to be quiet with yourself, it centers you, and gives you an awareness of yourself. I believe art is one of the highest form of communication — a universal language that evokes emotions”. [1]
It’s more about feelings than what she actually sees and the desire to have those feelings come through the painting. Pastels allow her to do that because they are so immediate. You feel it and you can just put it down before it is lost. You don’t have to mix the paint, or wait for anything to dry.
Growing up, Mary Jane was always involved with drawing and painting. She started teaching at age 16 at the Gifted Child Society where she realized that she loved working with young people.
She received her Bachelor of Fine Art Degree from Maryland Institute College of Art, where her concentration was in drawing and printmaking. She earned a Master of Arts in Education with honors from New York University and has taught both publicly and privately while exhibiting widely. Mary Jane's award-winning work is in both public and private collections. In December 2015 she opened Studio 268 in Setauket, New York, where she teaches and shows her work, as well as the works of local artists. You may view her art at www.maryjanevanzeijts.com

LAST CHANCE! TEN NEW WORKS by Mary Jane van Zeijts, October 1-29

The Performing Arts Studio-Theater Entrance 224 E. Main St. Port Jefferson, NY 11777

(mostly) TRUE THINGS is a game wrapped in a storytelling show. A fantastic line-up of storytellers - some experienced comics and performer, some taking the stage for the first time - share a true story. But some stories include subtle little lies. In Act 2, the audience gets to question the storytellers - who can improvise their responses - then votes for the person they think told their story with no lies. Some improvised, story-inspired music and songs written for the show by host/creator Jude Treder-Wolff are additional ingredients for a high-energy, often hilarious, emotion-packed and entertaining show. There are prizes involved, if you can believe a thing like that (you totally can!)
The theme for the stories in this show is IT'S COMPLICATED! Messy, interesting life experiences shared by:
Shoshana Rubin, an Emmy-winning television producer and artist
Calvin Cato, a comic who performs in clubs and venues all over the country, has been featured on RISK! The Story Collider and many other shows
Carline Napolitano, a psychotherapist, poet and writer telling a story onstage for the first time
Zachary Lennon-Simon, a union organizer, storyteller and writer
Jude Treder-Wolff, host/producer, created (mostly) TRUE THINGS in 2014, performs all over NYC and around the country, multiple Moth-winner, featured in Generation Women at Joe's Pub, New Tricks, Gather NYC at the Museum Of Art and Design in NYC, Story District in Washington D.C., Ex Fabula in Milwaukee, WI, and many others.

Andrew Newell Wyeth was primarily a realist painter who worked in a regionalist style, often painting the land and people of his hometown in Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania, and his summer home in Cushing, Maine, He was one of the best- known representational U.S. artists of the middle 20th century and his influences included the landscape artist Winslow Homer. But, further analysis of his work reveals many paintings more in line with the abstract expressionists he admired. In fact, he often considered himself to be an "abstractionist".
While public perception has made a clear division between Wyeth and “Modern” artists, they both share a reactionary and impulsive approach to making art, with the focus being on two-dimensional composition and spontaneous emotional expression.
This lecture will be presented by Jonathan Van Brunt, who also considers both Winslow Homer along with Franz Kline to be influences. Jon’s love for landscape painting came from seeing the work of Andrew Wyeth. A focus on composition as well as expressive application of paint has been the basis of Jon’s work. A student at Maine College of Art & Design, Jon earned a B.F.A. in Printmaking. He went on to earn an M.F.A in Painting at Ohio University School of Art & Design where he developed his abstract art style while teaching two- dimensional design during his graduate studies.
This lecture will take place in our newly renovated gallery in St. James on Wednesday, October 28th at 7PM and is FREE. You may register online https://theatelieratflowerfield.org/lectures or call 631-250- 9009 for more information

TEN years ago, in a former helicopter factory in Flowerfield, St. James, NY, The Atelier was born. It was modeled after the great traditions of the early Florentine masters, where students could draw and paint alongside their teachers in an environment devoted to learning, mentorship and artistic excellence.
TEN years later, The Atelier continues to grow and flourish!

If you have a 10” x 10” portrait, does it include ten fingers? Does your 10” x 10” landscape include 10 trees, 10 branches, 10 clouds, 10 flowers, 10 birds? Have you used 10 colors in your 10” x 10” painting? The ten is open to your artistic interpretation!
This exhibition is open to all artists, who may submit up to three works measuring 10” x 10”, excluding square frames, in any medium for $25. Artwork must be ready to hang, with a label attached to the back listing the artist’s name, title, and medium.
