Drunken Driver Hits Man; Drives Off: Police

The man was walking in the bicycle lane when the drunk driver crashed into him, police say.

CENTEREACH, NY — A man was arrested Sunday morning in Centereach after Suffolk police say he drove while intoxicated, hit a man and drove off.

Robert Bickmeyer, 60, of East Patchogue, was driving a 2006 Nissan eastbound on Portion Road, at the intersection of Avenue B, when he crashed into a man who was walking in the bicycle lane around 12:20 a.m., police said.

The man who was hit, 40-year-old Giovanni Menendez, of Holbrook, was brought to Stony Brook University Hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries, police said.

Bickmeyer was charged with DWI and leaving the scene of an accident. He is scheduled to be arraigned on Sunday at First District Court in Central Islip.
