Fun with Fractions at Arrowhead Elementary

As part of their mathematics unit on fractions, Arrowhead Elementary School third-graders learned about the complex subject in a fun and creative way.

To visually represent the topic, the students transformed simple shapes into multiple art pieces and then completed math equations to determine the fractal equivalent of the items.

“The students have been having fun with fractions as they bring math to life with beautiful work,” said teacher Patricia Cipriano. “They’ve been working hard to learn the subject matter, and these hands-on projects helped them enjoy what they are learning.”

During the project, the students created “Fraction Sundaes” using nine paper scoops of ice cream and determining what percent of each were included; “Fraction Kites” using 25 different colored squares and determining what fraction of each was represented; and “Fraction Creatures” using one circle cut into many pieces to make up a picture. Additionally, after reading the book “Grandfather Tang’s Story,” the students created “Tangram Illustrations,” a Chinese form of storytelling with seven shapes cut from a square of paper.
