'Harriman Hall Deer’ Freed From Stony Brook University Classroom

The small buck had crashed through a window and was trapped before being led to safety outside and freed by staffers from the DEC.

STONY BROOK, NY — Move over Wolfie, and make way for the Harriman Hall deer.

Stony Brook University students on their way to a calculus class got quite a shock when they peered into a classroom in Harriman Hall and saw a small buck milling around the desks and chairs. In a widely-circulated Instagram video, the animal can be seen through a door window walking around near a blackboard and then can be heard bumping into a desk. One commenter joked that the animal will now be known as "the deer of Harriman Hall."

The animal had crashed through a small plexiglass window when it found itself in the tight jam.

State Department of Environmental Conservation Conservation police officers and other wildlife staffers used a catch pole around the head of the deer, which was about 120 pounds, and then brought it outside where they released it, according to the DEC.

The buck had already shed its antlers and had "no apparent injuries beyond a small cut near one of its rear hoofs, which was likely caused by crashing through the plexiglass window," DEC officials said.

The whole operation, which took the rescuers about 45 minutes, was achieved by the students being moved into an adjacent classroom.

Stony Brook University officials said the area was cleaned and the building secured by the university's Facilities and Services team.
