An Irish-Inspired Math Treat at Nassakeag Elementary
Irish soda bread was donated to the St. James Food Pantry

Connecting studies in math, English language arts and the school’s character education program, third-grade students in Kathryn Comiskey’s and Maureen MacDowell’s classes at Nassakeag Elementary School made more than 30 loaves of Irish soda bread for the St. James Food Pantry, just in time for St. Patrick’s Day.
Working in teams, the students measured, poured and mixed batter using traditional measuring tools. They were then challenged with making equivalent measurements when one of the tools the recipe called for was removed. They worked together to problem solve and deploy their classroom lessons to complete the recipe.
