Is it all in the number?

Are you creating Healthy Habits?

Is it really about the number?

I was thinking this week about how powerful habits are when it comes to health. Of course we all have healthy and less healthy habits that are already part of our routine, but wouldn’t it be great to be able to harness the power of habits in order to make health and personal wellness feel… easy?

Habits are hard to make, that’s for sure! But, what’s really interesting, is they’re equally hard to break for good once they’re established. So that means if you can get through the hard part of creating a pattern, you’re going to be able to keep those habits without too much effort on your part. Is your weight really about the number? That’s a much more complicated answer than you are probably thinking. Because the answer really is no. Now I’m not saying that weighing 200 pounds as a female is the same as 175, or 125. But there are a lot more factors to consider if you are considering a weight loss than just the number.

Usually the first thing a client wants me to know is how much she/he wants to weigh. If it was that easy everyone would drop weight, be healthy and it would stay off. But it isn’t really about the number, because it is not the food that got you where you are!
I want to know how you feel. Not are you tired, do you have unexplained pain, are you hungry all the time. How do you feel? How will you feel 25 pounds lighter? 50 pounds lighter?

More importantly WHY.
If you feel happy….
Why?
If you have more energy…
Why is that good?
If you have less pain…..
What will you do with that?

What will your life look like if you lose weight and get healthier? These are the answers that matter. How many times have you gained and lost but have not answered your questions? This is the difference between weight loss and life change. Emotion and reaction.
If you are weighing yourself every day and the number is going down. That’s great. But what are you thinking? Feeling? I’m sure you are happy that you are losing. But do you know why? Why did you gain in the first place? What emotion were you feeding on the way up and have you said hello to that feeling, understood that feeling, worked with it and held it so that your WHY for losing is your new motivation in life? Life stress very often causes weight gain, a diet can help with that. But it is a temporary solution. You may get to that magic number, but then what? The numbers matter for physical health, but it is discovering your WHY that will be the ultimate solution. The lasting change.
