Suffolk Federal is proud to announce that the credit union’s President & CEO William J. O’Brien, has been recognized by the Long Island Business News at their recent Outstanding CEO Awards ceremony. The awards celebrated Long Island’s top executives and signature firms and organizations. The annual Outstanding CEO award recognizes business and not-for-profit principals, presidents, executive directors, managing partners and partners who have consistently demonstrated remarkable leadership skills, integrity, values, vision and a commitment to excellence, financial performance, community and diversity.
O’Brien, of East Setauket, became President & CEO of Suffolk Federal in 2008. With more than 27 years of leadership in consumer and commercial financial services, he provides leadership and overall direction and administration of the operation of the credit union consistent with its vision and mission. He has over 33 years of experience in banking and prior to Suffolk Federal, was the Chief Operations Officer of NuVision Federal Credit Union, an $800 million organization.
O’Brien has been appointed to the Housing Finance Reform Task Force Committee in Washington, D.C. for the advancement of the credit union community. He has been honored by the Jewish Academy of Suffolk County for Business Leadership; recognized by the Salvation Army for being an outstanding individual who makes a difference in the lives of individuals in our community; and honored by Tomorrow’s Hope Foundation, specifically the Holy Angels Regional School in Patchogue, for his commitment to its Adopt-A-School program. He is committed to several community organizations including the LT. Michael P. Murphy Memorial Scholarship Foundation, Long Island Cares Food Bank, Girl Scouts of Suffolk County, the LI2Day Breast Cancer Walk, Stony Brook Children’s Hospital and more.
O’Brien received an MBA from Fairleigh Dickenson University. He was an instructor at the American Institute of Banking in Bethesda, Maryland and Montgomery College in Takoma Park, Maryland. He has served on the boards of several non-profit organizations including the George Pittas Children’s Foundation and the Big Brothers of the National Capital Area of Maryland. He is currently on the Executive Board of the Tomorrow’s Hope Foundation, Vice Chairman of the Board of CUC Mortgage Corporation, and a member of Stony Brook University Children’s Hospital Task Force Committee.
