Former NYPD Police Chief Drowns In Stony Brook Backyard Pool: Police

STONY BROOK, NY — A man who drowned in a backyard pool in Stony Brook Friday night was a former police chief for the New York Police Department, according to media reports.

According to Suffolk County police, the incident took place at a home on Malverne Lane at about 7:45 p.m. Sixth Precinct officers responded to the home after a 911 caller reported that a family member, Anthony Izzo, 75, was found unresponsive in a pool, police said.

Officers and members of the Stony Brook Fire Department pulled the man from the pool and performed CPR, police said.

Izzo, who lived at the home, was transported to Stony Brook University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, police said.

Izzo served as the commanding officer for the NYPD 115th Precinct in 1995. He also served as chief of the Organized Crime Control Bureau.

"His leadership and dedication to the people of New York City left a lasting legacy. Our thoughts are with his family and loved ones. May he rest in peace," according to a statement from the NYPD 115th Precinct.
