Marcum Workplace Challenge Draws Long Island's Top Runners

Three runners representing the Smithtown School District among the top four finishers.

The annual 3.5-mile Marcum Workplace Challenge is Long Island’s largest participatory sporting event and charity fundraiser.

The annual fundraiser attracts runners and walkers to Jones Beach and raises funds for community charity organizations.

The Marcum Workplace Challenge is also celebrated as the region’s largest office picnic.

This year’s 10th Anniversary event was held on July 28 and saw the participation of some 9,350 plus runners and walkers from over 215 local companies.

The 2015 top male runner was Brendan Martin, who represented the Smithtown School District, and finished in a time of 17:44.

Mark Valentino and Carlos David Roa, also from the Smithtown School District, finished 3rd and 4th, with times of 18:27 and 18:48 respectively.

Betsy Eickelberg with Runner’s Edge, had the women’s best time of 20:45, winning the race two years in a row.

Top Wheelchair Athlete was Peter Hawkins, Dayton T. Brown, with a time of 16:21.
