Minnesauke Art Students Honored for Excellence

Art students from Minnesauke Elementary School have been selected for special recognition at the 2014 International Interdependence Hexagon Project Conference.

The project is a visual arts opportunity for young people ages 8-18 worldwide. It asks students to create art within the infinitely interlinking shape of a hexagon, a metaphor for interconnectedness. This is an opportunity for young people throughout the world to explore global themes, issues and ideas in school. The concept is that through critical thinking, research and taking a stand on one’s beliefs and understandings, changes in attitudes, awareness and, subsequently, action can occur.

Minnesauke won top honors in three categories: Most Effective All Over Interpretation, Most Creative Expression and Most Relevant to Theme. The students were also given two honorable mentions. Their work was submitted to the competition by art teacher Christine Becker.

The students’ displays have been featured since Sept. 5 as part of the Interdependence Day Hexagon Project Exhibit in the Mall at Steamtown, located at 300 Lockwood Ave. in Scranton, PA. The talented Three Village students will also be honored at a recognition event on Sept. 15.

“We are very proud of our young artists and grateful to Ms. Becker for providing them with the opportunity to participate in this creative project,” Minnesauke Assistant Principal Linda Messina said. “Our Minnesauke students swept the competition on this and won all three top categories as well as the two honorable mentions.”
