Robert Murphy Of Setauket Suffolk Legislative District 5's Firefighter Honoree Of 2026

SETAUKET, NY — Setauket firefighter Robert Murphy was one of several volunteer firefighters honored at a ceremony in Hauppauge last week, Legis. Steve Englebright's office said.

Englebright said that during his five years as a Setauket Fire Department volunteer firefighter, Murphy "has consistently demonstrated his commitment to protecting his community and surrounding areas."

He described the 24-year-old as a “dependable responder and active participant in department activities and training.”

Murphy, who is a lifelong Setauket resident, graduated from Ward Melville in 2020 and Stony Brook University in 2024 with a degree in Economics and a minor in Political Science.

He is currently working in government, and serves on the fire department's Rapid Intervention Team, helping ensure the safety of fellow firefighters operating in emergencies.

Recently, he was among the first firefighters to arrive at a structure fire, and "courageously" immediately went inside the second floor of the home and found a room-and-contents fire, Englebright said.

"Under challenging conditions, he quickly advanced a hose line on the fire and took decisive action to bring it under control," he said. “That day, his actions showed his training, composure, and unwavering commitment to the fire department and the community he grew up in and now serves."

"His readiness to face danger, sound judgment, and his dedication to protecting life and property are exemplary," he added.

In 2025, Murphy was named Setauket Fire Department’s Volunteer Firefighter of the Year and also received the award for responding to the most fires.

When nominating Murphy for the honor, Randy D’Arcy, second lieutenant of Setauket’s Hook and Ladder Company, said he represents "the next generation of volunteer firefighters ─ dedicated, hardworking and committed to giving back to the community he grew up in."

"His continued service and willingness to answer the call make him highly deserving of this recognition," he said.

When asked about being chosen as the district’s Volunteer Firefighter Honoree for 2026, Murphy was humble.

“Although I am honored to represent my legislative district, the true recognition belongs to my fellow firefighters,” he said. "The dedication and sacrifice they display every day have created a culture that is rooted in selflessness. Serving alongside them has proved to be the most rewarding aspect of my life, as we all share one purpose of helping those in need. That sense of purpose is all I need.”
