Suffolk Long Island Mentor & Mentee

Are you a struggling young adult? An experienced professional? Local nonprofit recruiting mentors and mentees for its mentoring program

Heawon Hake, Suffolk L.I. Mentor & Mentee founder, conceived of this organization due to the lack of support that she experienced as a young adult. Living in her native South Korea, she could expect to marry into an established family, but she could not expect to be regarded as an equal to her male counterparts. She did not have a mentor to ask for advice or to help her to become the woman that she wanted to be. For this reason, Heawon came to the United States determined to find herself and assert her independence. Many years later, in 2014, her dream of helping new adults to find their way in life came to fruition in the form of the Mentor & Mentee initiative.

Today, this nonprofit organization counts with a board of directors, a team of interns and volunteer mentors, all equally invested in Heawon's vision. Most important of all, our volunteer mentors make this enterprise possible, sharing life experiences as well as professional advice with mentees. Ranging from 18 to 34 years old, mentees come to us for a variety of reasons. Some are struggling with their new found independence, some are in need of career advice, and yet others simply need an adult perspective to help them gain insight into their life goals. Mentees profit from their relationship with their mentors not only professionally and academically, but socially as well. They forge lasting friendships that benefit mentors as well by providing them personal fulfillment and new perspectives.

At Suffolk L.I. Mentor & Mentee, we are constantly seeking volunteer mentors that are willing to share their knowledge and experience with new adults. If you are interested in lending a hand to your own mentee and helping them to find and achieve their goals, you may profit from becoming a part of our team. You will be welcomed into a family that does not just interact with mentees, but also shares meaningful friendships between board members, interns, and between volunteers themselves. On the other hand, if you are a young adult and believe that you could profit from such an enriching experience, Mentor & Mentee would be happy to help. Whether you are struggling in school, choosing a career path or experiencing family issues, we will provide you with a mentor that will act in your best interest. Even if you are not struggling at all, if you are in need of advice or added experience to your résumé, a mentor will be assigned to you based on your specific needs.
