The Top 4 Habits of Highly Successful "Losers"

What habits do successful weight losers engage in that unsuccessful losers don't? According to numerous research findings, simple but CONSISTENT behaviors make the difference for those that have lost and kept off weight.

Below are 4 outstanding habits that have been found to contribute to successful weight loss and maintenance:

  1. Eat breakfast - according to the National Weight Control Registry, one of the top 4 habits that successful weight losers engaged in was eating breakfast. This simple habit minimizes binging later in the day and helps maintain higher energy levels throughout thre day.

  2. Weigh yourself once/week - research shows that those who weighed themselves once/week, were more consistent at losing and maintaining their weight. My experience as a trainer confirms this. My only concern with this strategy is when stepping on the scale becomes a daily obsession. This can sometimes lead to disappointment since many are impatient and want rapid weight loss. Also, some lose sight oif the fact that weight can fluctuate based on many factors, such as water retention. So the bottom line is weigh yourself weekly and look for long term changes. Be patient!

  3. Eat a ow fat, high carbohydrate diet  - YEP! That's right! Studies, like those conducted by the National Weight Control Registry show that the majority of successful wight losers ate a low fat, high carb diet. I am not talking about lots of STARCHY or PROCESSED carbs here. Stick to carbs that have a low glycemic index rating. 

  4. Engage in at least 1 hour of physical activityday - 90% of National Weight Control Registry study participants did at least an hour of moderate intensity exercise each day. I must stress that studies also show that it does NOT have to be an hour of continuous exercise. It can be broken up in a few time periods. INTENSITY is the key.
