18-Wheeler Crashes Into FDR Drive Overpass, Disrupts Morning Traffic
The tractor-trailer was too tall to be driving on the FDR and got stuck when the top of its cab struck an overpass.
UPPER EAST SIDE, NY — An 18-wheeler's trailer was torn open Monday morning when the big rig crashed into an overpass near East 90th Street on the FDR Drive, forcing a cleanup effort that disrupted morning traffic on the highway.
The top of the tractor-trailer — which never should have been on that stretch of the FDR — made contact with the 11-foot-5 high overpass shortly after midnight, the New York Post reported. After the initial contact the trailer split open and the vehicle became stuck in the overpass, according to the report.
Officials began cleaning up the scene around 2 a.m., but the wreckage wasn't completely gone until around 7 a.m., according to NY1 traffic reporter Jamie Stelter.
