Upper East Side Council Candidates Ready For Back-To-Back Forums

The contenders in the competitive District 5 race will face off twice next week — including their first in-person forum.

UPPER EAST SIDE, NY — The half dozen Democrats running for the Upper East Side's open City Council seat will be quizzed on their policy priorities in back-to-back forums next week.

The first event, starting at 4 p.m. Tuesday, was organized by Carnegie Hill Neighbors and will stream live on their website. Held at a church in Carnegie Hill, it will be the first forum of the election cycle to bring all seven candidates together in person, although the general public cannot attend due to space constraints.

Moderated by NY1 anchor Roger Clark, the candidates will be asked to address "a full scale recovery of the district" after the pandemic, with a focus on historic preservation, overdevelopment and land use, quality-of-life services by city departments, support for small businesses and the scourge of retail vacancies.

The public can register to watch and submit questions on Eventbrite.

The second forum will start 6 p.m. Wednesday, hosted by the nonprofit Urban Outreach Center. This one will focus on food policy, asking six of the candidates about their plans to reduce food insecurity. (Tamayo is not listed as a participant.)

It will stream live at uocnyc.org/forum.

Less than five weeks remain before the June 22 city primary elections — the first that will feature ranked-choice voting.
