Armed Man Fires Shots Inside Memorial Sloan Kettering Hospital

The 65-year-old man barricaded himself inside the Upper East Side cancer center for more than two hours Thursday before police arrested him.

UPPER EAST SIDE, NY — An armed man fired shots inside Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center and barricaded himself inside for more than two hours Thursday night before police coaxed him out.

The incident began around 9:30 p.m. Thursday when the man, armed with a handgun, fired shots inside the East 67th Street hospital building, according to police. A large police presence formed outside the hospital, and authorities asked residents to avoid the area.

Police identified the suspect as Joseph Gill, a Harlem resident. An NYPD spokesperson could not confirm whether Gill was a patient at Sloan Kettering.

After Gill barricaded himself inside for more than two hours, he was arrested and taken into custody at 11:54 p.m., with no hostages taken and no injuries reported, police said.

Gill was charged with two counts of attempted murder of a police officer and criminal possession of a weapon.
