ASPCA Offering Discounted Adoption Fees for Kittens, Cats This Week

To celebrate the birthday of the ASPCA's founder, adoption fees for kittens will be dropped from $125 to just $15 this week.

UPPER EAST SIDE, NY — The ASPCA's latest adoption promotion is the cat's meow.

Starting Monday, Aug. 29 and ending Sunday, Sept. 4, the ASPCA adoption center on the Upper East Side is reducing adoption fees for all kittens and waiving adoption fees for cats older than 1-year-old, an ASPCA spokeswoman told Patch. The adoption fee for kittens will be reduced to just $15, representing a sharp decrease from the usual $125.

The promotion is celebrating the Aug. 29 birthday of the ASPCA's founder, Henry Bergh, and the ASCPA's 150th anniversary.

“When Henry Bergh founded the ASPCA in April 1866, he was driven by a fierce dedication to stop animal abuse and suffering. That drive continues in our work, now supported by modern technologies and an increased awareness and respect for the true value of animals,” said ASPCA President & CEO Matt Bershadker in an April press release.

Check out a list of adoptable cats at the ASPCA website (kittens not listed but ASPCA spokeswoman said "we have a lot").

The ASPCA adoption center is located on 424 E. 92nd St. between First and York avenues. The center is open from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Monday through Saturday and 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sundays.

Anyone interested in adopting a pet must follow these steps (via ASPCA website):

  • You must be 21 years of age or older to adopt.
  • Adopters are required to provide a government issued photo ID (Driver’s License, State Identification Card, Passport, etc.) and separate proof of current address (such as a lease or a telephone, utility or cable bill). Government issued photo ID is not accepted as proof of address.
  • If you are interested in adopting a dog, please make sure to bring all of the members of your household including any resident dogs. In some cases, this may be a requirement to adopt. If you live alone and have a resident dog, please make sure to bring a trusted friend or family member to wait with your resident dog while you go on a tour, as owned pets are not permitted on tours.
  • If you have a resident cat, please leave them at home as we cannot perform any adoptions with resident cats present.
  • You may be asked to provide one personal reference, reachable by phone.
  • Be sure to check your building’s policy relevant to pet ownership to avoid any landlord concerns.
  • If you have any questions, please call the Adoption Desk at (212) 876-7700, ext. 4120.
  • In most cases, you can take your new pet home on the same day. Prepare your home and check out our adoption tips before you pay us a visit.
