Body Of Boy, 4, Found After He Fell Into Harlem River: NYPD

Authorities confirmed Tuesday that they had recovered the body of the four-year-old boy who fell into the Harlem River on Saturday.

UPPER EAST SIDE, NY — Authorities confirmed Tuesday that they had recovered the body of the four-year-old boy who fell into the Harlem River on Saturday, spurring an extended search.

Around 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, a Parks Department employee saw the boy's body in the water under the piers off the shore of Randall's Island near Field 7, a soccer field where the boy reportedly fell into the river Saturday afternoon.

Police pronounced the boy dead at the scene. Tuesday evening, police confirmed that the body was that of Brendan Mitchell, who lived in Washington Heights with his family. (Earlier, his age had been erroneously reported as five.)

The medical examiner will determine Mitchell's cause of death. Friends of his family have started a GoFundMe on behalf of his parents.
