The New York Society Library

The New York Society Library is New York City's oldest library and a vibrant community of readers, writers, and families. Since its founding in 1754, the Library has been connecting books and people in an environment of intellectual freedom.

Located at 53 East 79th Street near Madison Avenue, the Library is open to the public daily for reading, reference, exhibitions, tours, and many events. Membership, available to all for an annual fee, grants you book borrowing privileges, access to study rooms, and other services.

The beautiful landmark building includes a collection of roughly 300,000 books plus e-books and periodicals, handsome reading, study, and event spaces, and the public Reference Room and Peluso Family Exhibition Gallery. The Library hosts lectures, conversations, poetry readings, performances, seminars, and other events throughout the year. An inviting Children’s Library holds over 10,000 volumes for children through young adults and produces events for young readers and writers from birth through high school. The New York City Book Awards, an annual prize established by the New York Society Library in 1995, honors books of literary quality or historical importance that evoke the spirit or enhance appreciation of New York City.
