Through Libations &amp; Citations: A Juneteenth Celebration, curated by gaudanse’s Artistic Director, Imani Gaudin, history was transformed into living memory, creating sacred spaces where storytelling, art, and community converged. The weekend began at the Rosenwald School in Donaldsonville, Louisiana, with a standing-room-only conversation and book signing featuring Chief Justice (Ret.) Bernette Joshua Johnson, co-author KaTrina Griffin, and interviewed by The Honorable Karen Wells Roby. Their warm, candid exchange felt less like an interview and more like a gathering among family in their living room, embodying the spirit of connection that gaudanse seeks to foster. For many, it was a first encounter with this historic space.&nbsp;"I have never been here before," one attendee said. "I didn't even know this place existed," said another, affirming the organization's commitment to cultivating new audiences and expanding access to the arts in rural communities.

“I think what is happening in America is impacting young people, and we want them to be involved in the process…we want them to be leaders and get involved in their communities and change whatever needs to be changed and improved.” US Magistrate Judge Karen Wells Roby stated, “It was an honor interviewing a giant in the legal profession who has always fought for civil rights and is one who exemplifies what a good leader looks like.”
Gaudanse was honored to share space with these historical figures and community leaders.
“It was important for us to focus on accessible, sustainable, wellness-based art practices in curating these events by providing free experiences focused on the arts, cultural preservation, and our humanity. We gathered to celebrate joy, love, and freedom by honoring our ancestors,” stated Imani Gaudin, event curator.
As the celebration continued at the Episcopal Church of the Ascension, history and artistry intertwined beneath the legacy of the GU272 descendants. Through music, movement, poetry, journaling, and a candle lighting ceremony, Gaudin's new work,&nbsp;bury me in new orleans, invited participants to honor those who came before us while reflecting on the enduring power of love.&nbsp;Saxophonist Lazarro Nettles delighted the audience with jazzy tunes.&nbsp; Oral histories shared by our community elders illuminated generations of lived experience, preserving invaluable cultural memory and reminding all present that storytelling is both an act of preservation and a pathway to healing. Varnel Jackson, Sr., a descendent of the Hohen Solms/Modeste (Donaldsonville) community, Roy Quezaire, Jr and his sister, Dr. Barbara Quezaire LeBoeuf both born in Donaldsonville, intrigued the audience with memories a joy, laughter and love, recounting moments at the True Friends Hall where live music, dancing and balls served as their entertainment, all centered around the arts and artists as the pivotal force of nature that support mental wellness.

The celebration culminated on Day 2 in New Orleans' City Park, where Gaudin and dance artist Celine Seiber brought&nbsp;nanibu: The Throne Room&nbsp;to life through a whimsical and regal performance that invited the community into a collective libations ceremony to pay homage to ancestors, celebrate freedom, and embrace one another through shared humanity.
Across Donaldsonville and New Orleans, Libations &amp; Citations: A Juneteenth Celebration demonstrated that Juneteenth is not only a remembrance of liberation—it is an opportunity to uplift rather than divide, to honor rather than marginalize, and to strengthen the relationships that bind communities together. Through oral history, artistic expression, and intentional gathering, gaudanse continues to preserve living histories, foster human connectivity, and create spaces where every story matters and every voice is welcomed and celebrated through artistic expression.

About Knickerbocker Chamber Orchestra
Founded in 2008, the Knickerbocker Chamber Orchestra (KCO) brings outstanding orchestral and chamber music performances and educational programs to the downtown community, incorporating the area’s rich history into innovative presentations through collaboration with acclaimed soloists, choral, dance and literary organizations.
Past highlights of the KCO’s presentations include the world premiere at the World Financial Center Winter Garden of Mr. Fagin’s composition “And Bold to Fall Withal (Henry Hudson in The New World)”, featuring Broadway star Jason Danieley in 2010, and the 2011 world premiere of Mr. Fagin’s “Robert Moses Astride New York,” also at the Winter Garden, featuring Rinde Eckert. More recent highlights include the premiere of Mr. Fagin’s Juneteenth composition “Good Trouble” at the Museum of Jewish Heritage in 2022 and his “In Every Grain of Sand,” inspired by the works of Rachel Carson, celebrating Earth Day 2023 at the Winter Garden; and “Courage to Act,” in conjunction with the exhibit “Courage to Act: Rescue in Denmark” at the Museum of Jewish Heritage in 2024.

Aaron Posner’s contemporary remix of Chekov’s “Seagull” showcasing unique concepts of love, family, and mental health

New York, NY - Stupid F***ing Bird is Aaron Posner’s somewhat unhinged adaptation of Anton Chekov’s Seagull. Originally staged in 2013 at Wooly Mammoth Theatre Company in Washington D.C. This interpretation utilizes the immersive aspects of the show with in-the-round seating; do not expect to find much of a fourth wall in this production. This performance holds a focus on the emotional weight associated with love, lust, heartache, heartbreak, and the damages and difficulties associated with parenting.
It follows the story of Conrad, a tortured artist and playwright desperately in love with Nina, his muse and first sweetheart. It takes place at the estate of his mother, Emma, an actress, former star, and egoist. Problems arise when Trigorin, an established writer and Emma’s lover, intercedes in the already tumultuous community dynamics in place. This draws to the surface misaligned romances, bitter betrayals, and intense manifestations and expressions of the rich emotional life always simmering under the surface.&nbsp;&nbsp;
“I think there’s tremendous power in admitting that despite centuries of introspection we humans still don’t know what to do with the indolent beasts that live within us, but something, or someone, makes us want to know better.” says Eileen Han, featured actress. “I’m very excited to join my ensemble in portraying this bittersweet love story, where we explore the part of love that is not pretty, the part of love that is out of our control.”
ABOUT THE ARTIST: Dani Pianin, is an up-and-coming trans actress and musician originally from Athens, Ohio. She is spearheading this production of Stupid F***ing Bird out of pure passion for the piece and a deft understanding of the content. She has been working in theatre for her whole life and is thrilled to make her NYC directorial debut with a piece she feels so strongly about. “I believe that the uniqueness of live theater lies in the willingness of both the audience and the actors to engage in an Imagined Dual Reality.” She says “In our attempt to invite you into an Imagined Dual Reality, one outside our Actual reality that demands we sit down &amp; shut up, I encourage our audience to be attentive, be expressive &amp; to speak their minds.”
ABOUT EG PRODUCTIONS: EG productions is a rag-tag group of meisner actors. It was formed from the rich artistic soil of Esper Studios under the keen mentorship of Barbara Marchant. Barbara is a veteran educator with a refined pedagogy that comes from 40 years of training actors. This is a zealous group of ambitious young professionals; from classmates to castmates they are excited to make a significant splash in the ever-changing landscape of independent theatre in NYC.

Shangri-La-La is a fast-moving new comedy musical inspired by the rise of Siegfried &amp; Roy — with original songs, Vegas glamour, impossible dreams, outrageous costumes, magic, friendship, immigrant reinvention, Steve Wynn, Bugsy Siegel, and just enough tiger danger to keep everyone alert.
Written by Mike Meier &amp; Peter Giambalvo, the show is part showbiz fairy tale, part immigrant dream, part Vegas fever dream — and, yes, inspired by actual events. Unfortunately.
The New York performances are part of the Midtown International Theater Festival and will take place at the American Theatre of Actors in Midtown Manhattan.
