City to Shut Off Water on Upper East Side Blocks Next Week

The water interruption will be a water main shutoff test related to the Safe Routes to Schools at Ramaz Lower School Project.

UPPER EAST SIDE, NY — The New York City Department of Environmental Protection will conduct a water main shutoff test on the Upper East Side next week that may affect residents of Lexington Avenue.

The department will shut off water on Lexington Avenue between East 83rd and East 85th streets Thursday Sept. 22 starting at midnight, according to a community advisory. Water should be shut down for four hours and is related to the ongoing project at Ramaz Lower School.

"This work is done to make sure that the water valves are working properly. If the test is successful, construction to replace the water main can commence," reads the community advisory.

  • The DDC recommends that you shut off the water main valve in your house/building in order to avoid problems that may occur if/when sediment enters or is released from your plumbing.
  • You are asked to shut off all WATER cooled appliances, which may include air conditioners, etc.
  • Once water service is returned, turn the main house valve back on and flush the system by running your faucets to sinks and tubs for about 15 to 30 minutes.
