De Blasio To Honor 'Daily Show' Comedian At Gracie Mansion

Comedian Hasan Minhaj, a regular on "The Daily Show," recently slammed the Trump administration at the White House Correspondents Dinner.

UPPER EAST SIDE, NY — NYC Mayor Bill de Blasio will honor "The Daily Show" correspondent Hasan Minhaj, who most recently took on President Donald Trump's administration at the White House Correspondents Dinner.

De Blasio and First Lady Chirlane McCray will host Minhaj Wednesday night at Gracie Mansion for the Asian-Pacific American Heritage Reception. Several city officials such as Office of Immigrant Affairs Commissioner Nisha Agarwal, NYC Housing Preservation and Development Commissioner Maria Torres-Springer and Department of Youth and Community Development Commissioner Bill Chong will attend the reception, according to a City Hall press release.

Minhaj, 31, is mostly known for his role as senior correspondent on the "The Daily Show," but his profile has risen after a gutsy performance at the White House Correspondents Dinner. Minhaj took on Donald Trump, even though the president bucked tradition and didn't attend the event, while praising the journalists who uphold the First Amendment.

"Free speech is the foundation of an open and liberal democracy. From college campuses to the White House, only in America can a first-generation, Indian-American Muslim kid get on this stage and make fun of the president," Minhaj said during his performance.
