Dog Rescued From Beneath Roosevelt Island Bridge

ROOSEVELT ISLAND, NY — In a fitting end to a strange year, an NYPD rescue squad completed an unusual mission on Monday, rescuing a dog that had inexplicably become trapped under the Roosevelt Island Bridge.

Officers from the NYPD's Special Ops unit responded early Monday to the bridge, which stretches between Roosevelt Island and Long Island City in Queens.

They found the small dog trapped under the grating beneath the walkway, over the water. Officers cut the grating and lowered themselves down to where the pup was waiting, police said.

Kevin Brown, chief of the Roosevelt Island Public Safety Department, said that the dog was rescued with no injuries, according to Roosevelt Island Daily. It had tags, but there was no owner in sight, he said.

Police tweeted Tuesday afternoon that "Sam" had been reunited with his owner through the ASPCA and social media.
