Dump Truck Backs Over 76-Year-Old on Upper East Side

The elderly woman was crossing the street when the truck backed over her, severing her leg.

UPPER EAST SIDE, NY — A woman's leg was severed when a dump truck backed over her while she tried to cross the street on the Upper East Side, police told Patch.

The 76-year-old woman was in the intersection of East 73rd Street and 2nd Avenue when the truck struck her and pinned her leg to the ground, police said. The woman was taken to New York Presbyterian Hospital in serious but stable condition, but had to have her leg amputated, police said.

“All I saw was her hip and up. Everything else was under the truck,” a doorman who witnessed the accident told the New York Post. “She was in agonizing pain. Screaming so loud I can still hear it in my head.”

The doorman told the Post that the construction in the area creates a blind spot in the intersection for pedestrians and motorists.

The dump truck driver was not charged with a crime, police told Patch.
