Harlem Left Out of Top 100 Neighborhoods in New York City: Study

HARLEM, NY — Is it possible that Harlem is one of the worst neighborhoods in New York City? Most likely it's not, but neighborhood residents may be surprised to see where their community ranks in a recent study of the best neighborhoods in New York City.

A new study on the Best Neighborhoods in New York City conducted by Niche.com omitted Harlem from the top 100 of its rankings. In fact, Harlem almost dropped out of the top 150 as it was ranked No. 144, one of the worst rankings given out in Manhattan.

While Niche was impressed with the neighborhood's outdoor activities, nightlife and it's diverse makeup the study panned the community on cost of living, the real estate market, crime and jobs.

For those scratching their heads and wondering how Niche came up with such a low ranking for Harlem, they can take a look at the ranking's methodology for the categories they take into consideration when ranking a neighborhood.

Overall, the list was especially kind to Manhattan neighborhoods, including nine of the Top 10, and neighborhoods below 34th Street. In fact, the study showed some serious bias against Upper Manhattan. Harlem's neighbors to the North, Washington Heights and Inwood, were ranked 81 and 103 respectively.
