Heroin, Submachine Gun Seized During Upper East Side Drug Raid: Police

Police raided the apartment of a suspected Upper East Side drug dealer Thursday and recovered heroin and a submachine gun.

UPPER EAST SIDE, NY — An Upper East Side man is facing drug and gun charges after being arrested Thursday following a raid of his apartment, police told Patch.

The apartment of Dashawn Hawkins — located on East 94th Street near First Avenue — was raided by officers around 6 a.m. Thursday, police said. During the raid around 30 grams of heroin and a submachine gun were seized and Hawkins, 26, was placed under arrest, police said. The gun was fitted with high-capacity magazines and what appeared to be a silencer, according to a press release from the U.S. Attorney.

A federal investigation revealed that Hawkins had been dealing heroin and fentanyl since August. In September Hawkins sold the heroin that killed 29-year-old Colin Cameron, according to the U.S. Attorney. Cameron died on Sept. 2 from an overdose, according to the U.S. Attorney.

Colin Cameron remembered as "smart," and "quick to smile."

“Far too often now, we are seeing the devastating effects of opioid abuse on our communities. We must work to stop these dangerous drugs from reaching our streets and killing our citizens," U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara said in a press release. "Dashawn Hawkins allegedly dealt in heroin, including the fentanyl-laced heroin that killed Colin Cameron. We thank the New York City Police Department for their outstanding investigative efforts and their collaboration that made the bringing of these federal charges possible."

Hawkins, who also went by the alias “Jhonny Cash," has been charged with drug possession with the intent to sell and criminal possession of the weapon, police told Patch.
